What is Fracking All About

Fracking is short for hydraulic fracturing. This is a type of drilling that uses cutting-edge technologies responsible for the surges in U.S. oil and the production of natural gas. It involves tapping shale and other rock formations by drilling more than a mile below the surface, then turning horizontal and going another thousand feet. A single site can amass numerous wells.

Once the well is drilled, small holes are made in the horizontal part of the pipe. A mixture, containing 90% water, 9.5% sand and .5% other additives is pumped through the pipe at high pressures to create fractures in the rock. The additives in the fracking fluid mixture help reduce friction, which also reduces the amount of pressure needed, reducing air emissions. The additives also prevent pipe corrosion, which helps protect the environment and boosts the well’s efficiency.

Safe fracking is a huge reason why the U.S. is experiencing an energy revolution. It allows the country to tap into vast oil and natural gas reserves that were previously unavailable. Upwards of 95% of all natural gas wells that will be drilled in the next decade will require this hydraulic fracturing technology. This type of fracking is also being used to create new production in old wells.

Because of fracking, the International Energy Agency claims that this country could become the world’s leading oil producer. The U.S. is already currently the leading producer of natural gas in the world. The EIA estimates that the gas production from the years 2012 to 2040 will increase 50%, with natural gas from fracking being the lead contributor.

Natural has is an alternative energy and also a natural form of energy. Natural gas can replace fossil fuel and reduce the amount of harmful emissions released into the earth’s atmosphere. It is non-toxic and can do all the jobs fossil fuels can, without threatening the soil, water or groundwater.

Most of the natural gas that is consumed is produced in the U.S. Overseas exportation is growing rapidly. A push to produce more natural gas in the U.S. has occurred more recently. Most of the natural gas is formed by heat and pressure on organic material and forms over millions of years.

Natural gas production can be an engine in alternative energy and allow humans to leave less of a footprint on the earth’s environment. Fracking can give Americans more opportunities for jobs, boosting the country’s economy at the same time.
