Adoption Day 4.0

dabadoptionToday is the fourth anniversary of the day we finalized the adoption of our son. It was supposed to be a day that will always have pleasant memories associated with it. However, all three of us suffered through Christmas and the following days that year with a series of illnesses. If I remember correctly it all started with very bad colds, could have been flu and ended with stomach bugs.

When the happy morning arrived Darius was screaming and unhappy, and his dads did not feel like going anywhere either. However, we did not want to do anything to mess up our long awaited court date. So we took whatever medications we could find to make the symptoms better and packed into the car for our appointment with the judge. A small group of people were attending with us, a couple friends, D’s first foster family, his caseworker and the law guardian. Thankfully the entire proceeding was short and uneventful. We dug deep down for some smiles for pictures, so our photo memories of it aren’t too bad. The folks that came to share it with us wanted to take us to lunch to celebrate but we came home and spent the rest of the day in bed.

We can now look back on it sort of fondly but the memory will always be colored by how sick we all were that day.  Have you ever had a long anticipated event altered by unforseen circumstances like sickness?

Kwanzaa on the Hudson

Last night we traveled to Hudson, NY in a light snow to an annual public event to celebrate Kwanzaa.  It features a demonstration of several items and readings that represent the principles of the holiday, African drumming, traditional African Dance, music and a hip hop dance group.

Here is Papa and Darius making some noise:

Snowstorm: The Big Dig

I exaggerate a bit, it was a pretty typical snowstorm for upstate NY. We got up early this morning to dig ourselves out, so we could go to the YMCA and the library like we do every Saturday morning. It was much colder than I expected it to be.

Here are my boys busy digging:

Family Photos: School Delayed by Snow Today

Last nights meager snowfall was apparently enough to delay the start of school this morning by two hours. Here’s our little man in the front yard with the first snowman of the season. Well, a five year old’s version of a snowman anyway. These are cellphone photos with no flash, I’d love to find a way to lighten them up.

All that work and what does he do? Kicks the poor snowman to the curb.

Our Family Thankgiving Trip 2008

Every year we travel to my (Steven’s) home town of Massena, NY to visit my family for Thankgiving. Ever since my mother died over nine years ago the festivities have been held at the home of one of my sisters. It’s a pretty small house, and we have a pretty big family. This year my sister’s daughter and son in-law hosted dinner since they purchased a rather large older home. My family has always welcomed Brian, and now Darius as members of the family. We don’t get the same reception with Brian’s parents, but that’s another story for another post if he wants to tell it.

Here are some photos from our trip. I’m really bad with remembering to bring a real camera anymore, all these shots were taken with my Iphone.
